Ready for an unforgettable walk on the wild side of Faial? This circular trail wraps around the stunning Caldeira — a massive volcanic crater formed over 400,000 years — and plunges you into the heart of the island’s raw, untamed nature.
Starting at the Caldeira viewpoint, duck through a small tunnel and step into another world: the crater’s interior, alive with lush greenery and whispers of ancient eruptions. Back on the trail, a dirt path leads you toward the Chapel of São João, winding through high-altitude ridges between 840 and 1,040 meters.
Keep your eyes peeled for rare and beautiful native plants like Azores Juniper, wild blueberries, and vibrant heathers — all part of the island’s laurel forest legacy. The well-marked trail is easy to follow, but be sure to go on a clear day to soak up the jaw-dropping views.
This is Faial at its wildest — volcanic, green, and full of life.
